CRIME INSURANCE

Protection Against Employee Theft and Fraud

Not all losses come from accidents or lawsuits. Crime Insurance helps protect businesses from financial losses caused by theft, fraud, forgery, and other dishonest acts—whether committed by employees or third parties.

At Smple Insurance, we help businesses identify internal and external crime exposures and secure coverage that protects cash flow, assets, and trust.

What Is Crime Insurance?

Crime Insurance provides coverage for direct financial losses resulting from criminal acts. These losses often aren’t covered by general liability or property insurance, leaving businesses exposed without a dedicated crime policy. Crime coverage is designed to protect against both internal risks (employee dishonesty) and external threats (fraud, theft, and deception).

What is Covered?

  • Employee Dishonesty: Covers "inside jobs" like embezzlement, skimming from the register, or payroll fraud.

  • Forgery & Alteration: Protection if someone forges your signature on a business check or alters the amount on a bank draft.

  • Computer & Funds Transfer Fraud: Covers hackers or employees who use your computer systems to wire money to an outside account.

  • Social Engineering: Protection against "impersonation scams" where a criminal tricks an employee into voluntarily wiring funds (e.g., a fake email from the "CEO").

  • Money & Securities: Covers the physical theft, disappearance, or destruction of cash and coins, whether they are inside your safe or in transit to the bank.

What Crime Insurance Does Not Cover
  • Owners & Partners: It generally only covers acts by employees. If a part-owner steals, the policy won't pay.
  • Inventory Shrinkage: You cannot claim a loss based solely on a "short" inventory count; you must prove a specific crime occurred.
  • Known Prior Acts: If you knew an employee had a history of theft before you hired them, the insurance will not cover their future crimes.
  • Indirect Losses: It pays for the stolen money, but not for "lost potential profit" or the cost of closing the shop for a day to investigate.
